SLUGGERNUT
a short story by me

Some things that I've held on to over the years, from childhood to adulthood, things that have presreved my childhood simply in their imagery.

A magical gem found deep within a drawer of my mother's things. It played many important parts in Barbie's adventures.
Disco
This is actually not the original ceramic panda from my childhood, the original was lost in my parent's divorce with the throwing out of many childhood things without my knowledge. But Ebay has miraculously given him back to me, through years of searching.
Panda
These were my first pair of earrings (somewhere around 1 years old) and my favorite pair throughout all my childhood. I rarely took them off. I wore them again, for the first time in well over a decade, on my wedding day.

Three for one
When I was a wee one I would run to the left of my mother and grab her hand to hold it when we were out, saying, 'I want the married hand!', and staring into the beautiful diamond and band. It's the only thing, as an adult, that I ever asked her for, when she was ready to part with it. It's one of my most treasured belongings.
The married hand
One of my mother's sewing tins. Now it houses leather braclets. Mom would be proud!
Sewing box
This shell necklace was a gift from the Sault Ste Marie Chippewa tribe when my parents registered my Indianness. I think I was about four.
Me Indian
I've had this for as long as I can remember. I don't know how I came to own it, it's just always been there. I used to keep a penny in his well. There's a whisker in it now, for whatever reason.
Mr. Elephant
My very first comic book. The begining of an obsession with Archie. I read parts of an Archie comic before bed almost every night for years. Sometimes, even now, I still do.
Comics!
The Archie collection. It seemed so much bigger when I was little.
The collection
My grandmother gave me this rosary when I completed my first communion. Despite my alternative beliefs, it's one of my favorite treasures.
Praise be
My first lunch box. Many a pb&j were held within those tin walls.
Lunching
One of my oldest possessions this suitcase housed my Barbie collection and I carried it with me EVERYWHERE. Eventually my Barbie collection became too large so I had to get a toy chest but this little guy still held my favorites.
The blue one
You remember in Mr. Mom when in trying to get Kenny to give up his Woobie, Jack has a nice reassuring talk with him and makes a deal that Kenny be without his woobie for a trial run? Well, my father went the opposite route. To get me to give up my LeeLee he took it and forced it over his head, creating a giant hole in the middle which eventually seperated most of its parts. Yeah ... this is what's left of it. Thanks dad!
LeeLee
Here's who's left of the gang. My childhood best friends. We've got (from left to right) Grumpy Bear, Mr. Seal, Muchie Chie, Sleepy Bear (his arms are like that because his neck has no support so his head falls down... because he's sleepy!), Mr. Lion, Garfield (his shirt says Gimme! Gimme!, I got him for xmas one year, presumably because my xmas lists were always realllly long. Gimme!), Ms. Elephant (she plays music from her butt), Odie dog (my absolute bestest friend), bear, lambie, and Lamb. I guess I was never too creative with the whole naming thing.
The gang
This was my tooth pillow. There's a little pouch in back that you slip your teeth into, to like, keep, for whatever reason.
Tooth Fairy
Like I said, to keep, for whatever reason. I guess so you can take pictures of them 20+ years later and put them on your blog to gross out your friends.
Teeth!
A washcloth that's a mitt with a mutt on it? What will they think of next?! This is the only thing that got me clean for many many years. Oh yeah, and soap.
Scrub me
This weird thing was in my closet for a very long time. It's scented wax, or something like wax, so your closet doesn't smell like dead puppies. Instead, it smells like a dead avon lady.
Smelly wax
When I was little I thought this was the most beautiful thing. I think it belonged to a grandmother. I've never worn it, I just ... stare at it, like Carlotta Valdes.
Pinned
My grandmother's watch. It's a wind up and I used to wear it to bed and fall asleep to its ticking.
Back in time
The face flips up to reveal a small metal cup with a waxy perfume in it. I used to wear it on my shirt and smear the smelly goo on my wrists. I was hot.
I guess it's a cow
This isn't the original bible man, my mother has him, but she found this exact replica in a thrift store where she lives and sent it to me. I don't know why but I've always thought it is so beautiful.
Bible me
This lamp was in my nursery. It's been in every bedroom I've ever had, since.
Lampy
It was always stored in a drawer in our house but when I moved out I confiscated it and now it's on the stove for all to see it's grapiness.
It's a hot plate, duh
Baby spoons with Bambie and Goofy. They are now coffee spoons with Bambie and Goofy.
Spoons
My mother made this nightgown for my sister and I. It has a hood on the back and deep pockets in the front to hide cookies in before bedtime. The material feels like velvet and it's the warmest thing ever. My sister and I would constantly steal it out of one another's rooms. I guess I won.
Sleepy clothes
These were my mother's books and thankfully they ended up in my possession because I've always loved them. It's a childrens book series called Book Trails, published in 1946.
Book worm
My favorite story in all of the books. This is a picture from near the end of the story where the tigers are chasing each other for the clothes, and they chase each other so fast they turn into butter. It made sense when I was little. Like, oh yeah, they turn into butter because they run fast. Of course!
