Yesterday was our first year wedding anniversary. With seven and a half years of relationship behind the belt it felt strange celebrating a #1 for an anniversary but it was exciting nonetheless. In honor of our Hawaiian wedding and honeymoon we made dinner reservations at Roy's, a Hawaiian fusion restaurant down in the wall street area. It received very good reviews both from a friend of mine and from a great NY restaurant website, so we had high hopes. We arrived an hour early to sip some Mai Tai's at the bar, and after we were seated at our table we started in on Hawaiian Martini's, which consist of vanilla vodka, coconut rum, and pineapple juice. For an appetizer we had Roy's Canoe for two, which was a smattering of crab cakes, coconut shrimp, raw tuna, and ribs. The crab cakes especially were fantastic but the tuna and shrimp were excellent as well. My entrée was sea bass over black chinese rice and some large leaf thing that served as the vegetable, in a red curry sauce. I enthusiastically ate the entire serving and had to stop short of licking the plate. It was probably the best meal I've had since Hawaii. Adam ordered "a tribute to roy" which was three small servings of different kinds of fish all prepared differently. For desert we ordered creme brulee which arrived with fresh fruit on the side. Also on the side of the desert plate was a single burning candle and the words Happy Anniversary written out in chocolate around the edge of the plate. It was beautiful. But no, it wasn't Adam's doing if that's what you're thinking. When initially I made the reservation they asked if we were celebrating anything so I told them. They apparently made note of it and throughout the night a server or manager would wish us a happy anniversary. The thing with the desert secured Roy's as the best dining experience I'd had in a very long time. Add to all of that the fact that their AC wasn't blasting cold, seating was intimate and spacious, service was attentive and friendly, and the restaurant was perfectly lit with candles and low lighting. Excellent for mood but not too dark that we couldn't see our food. All in all a very successful 1st year anniversary.
