Freezer burn   —   Personal

Do you know that part of the winter season that hits around February or March, that part of the season where you open the front door of your apartment and step from the warmth of the indoors into the bitter coldness of the outdoors and there's a moment where your brain, in all seriousness, thinks that perhaps summer is what happens in other parts of the world, but not yours? You don't remember what it's like to walk outside and not be hit with a wall of icy air, to wear only one thin layer of garment instead of wearing five layers of sweaters and yet still worry that your toes and ears will soon fall off because they just gave up on life. I've reached that point today. The sky is clear blue, the sun is high, the birds are singing, and the air is ... fucking freezing. Even those tough outdoor cats that I've seen stalking birds throughout the winter are now staring at me from behind curtained window panes as I walk to the bus, I hear them snicker and point when my back is to them. Bastards.
