The Midnight Lake Blob   —   Writing - Short Story

I wrote this "short story" when I was 13 years old. Inspired by/ripped off from, Creepshow 2's The Raft.

Just like any other day in California, it was sunny, dry and desert hot. Mellisa was just waking up to the loud beeping noise coming from her alarm clock. As she reached over to the night table to turn off the alarm clock, she was blinded by the bright ray of sun coming through her open bedroom window. Still not completely awake, she got out of bed and walked to the bathroom. As she took a shower she started to daydream about what a wonderful day she was about to have, but not realizing the nightmare ahead of her. She got out of the shower and got dressed.

Glancing at her alarm clock, she saw that is was 10:30am. "Oh my gosh!" she gasped outloud. She realized she was running late. Running down the stairs she pulled her long red wavey hair into a ponytail. Mellisa, unlike any other girl, did not need makeup. Her sparking green eyes, high cheekbones, perfect soft skin, red full lips and long wavey red hair were enough to make any man stop and stare.

Slipping on her loafers and grabbing her sunglasses and car keys from the kitchen table, she ran outside and hopped in her white convertable. She was to meet her boyfriend Bobby, her best friend Jessi, and Jessi's boyfriend Mike, out at Midnight Lake for a day of lots of sunshine and swimming.

As she pulled into the deserted parking lot she saw her friends already on the raft in the middle of the lake. She pulled off her clothes, revealing her new bathing suit and started to swim out to her friends. About halfway there she felt something grabbing at her legs. But of course she was imagining it. Or was she? This only made her swim faster. She reached the raft and climbed up on it.

"What took you so long?" Jessi asked, dangling her legs in the water.

"I was up all night cramming for midterms," Mellisa replied, just standing there. "Hey you guys," Mellisa said, changing the subject, "I thought I felt something pulling at my legs as I was swimming out here."

"It was probably just weeds or something," Bobby said with a funny look on his face.

"Hey!" Jessi screamed, still dangling her legs in the water, "Something has got my legs!"

"That's not funny, Jessi," Mellisa said. "That really scared m..." Melissa stopped what she was saying. Terror striken, she was looking at Jessi. As Mellisa watched frozen with fear, she saw Jessi get pulled off the raft and under the water.

"Jessica!" Michael screamed and jumped off the raft into the water after her. Bobby tried to stop him but it was too late. Michael was gone. Never to be seen again.

Mellissa, still frozen with fear, could not speak nor move. Bobby was pacing the raft, trying to figure out how to get them both to shore alive and untouched by the thing lurking below them. Suddenly he stopped and turned to Mellisa, who was now sitting on the raft crying in her hands.

"I've got it!" Bobby said.

Mellisa looked up from her hands but could not keep the tears from running down her beautiful face.

"I will try to out swim whatever is below us. Then once I get to land I'll get help for you. As long as you don't go in the water, you're safe." Bobby said.

Mellisa tried to say no. She tried to stop him. To make the words come out. But it was hopeless. Bobby jumped off the raft and started to swim to shore. He was halfway there. For a moment, just a moment, Mellisa had hope. But then that hope was shattered as she watched, helplessly, as she saw Bobby get taken under. Now to be another part of the graveyard that was now beginning to form at the bottom of the lake.

Mellisa screamed. She screamed so loud it echoed in the emptiness around her. It was again, too late. The thing started to come up onto the raft, grabbing at her. At last Mellisa was another victim of the Midnight Lake Blob.

Then it was silent.

But suddenly something broke the silence. It was a car full of teenagers, ready to spend a day of lots of sunshine and swimming at Midnight Lake.

The End
